Post Nasal Drip is the Backward Flow of Mucus Down Your Throat.

post nasal drip can be the result of sinus infection

Post nasal drip is the backward flow of mucus from the sinus cavities into the back of the throat. When a person has post nasal drip they may feel mucus stuck at the back of their throat and/or a feeling of constant dripping down the back of the throat.  Post nasal drip can cause infected throats which become sore and extremely irritated. With post nasal drip there seems to be a repetitive need to cough and clear the throat which often results in a raspy voice and even constant nose blowing.

The body produces around two cups of mucus a day which is usually swallowed unconsciously. Mucus is important to the body's natural balance  because it moistens and humidifies dry air that we breathe.  Mucus also helps trap and remove foreign microbes and most importantly it helps rid the sinuses of bacteria and infections.

Post nasal drip is the feeling of mucus, which may be thick, colored or even infected, accumulating and/ or dripping down the back of the nose into the throat.

post nasal drip come with sinus infection

Post nasal drip is often a side effect of a sinus infection.  Post nasal drip occurs when the body's normal mucus production  is accelerated due to an infection, sinusitis or/and allergen within the nasal passages and sinuses. This invasion of the sinuses and nasal cavities causes the body to send white blood cells to the delicate membranes that line the nose.  As a result the body produces more more mucus in an attempt to flush away the bacteria and infectious microbes.  All this mucus production eventually leads to post nasal drip. The post nasal drip happens when the cilia, the little hairs lining the nasal passages, are unable to move the mucus effectively.  The mucus gathers and become thick which in turn blocks the sinuses and the nasal passages. With nowhere else to go the mucus exits these passages down the back of the throat resulting in post nasal drip.

Our natural reaction to post nasal drip is to get rid of the excess mucus by blowing our noses and coughing up the mucus from the back of our throat.

What can cause post nasal drip?

  • Living in dry areas - Post nasal drip is often worse for people who live in a dry environment because the nasal cavities become dry and the mucus we produce dries, making it thick and difficult to get rid of. This stagnant mucus is then a perfect host for bacteria to live and thrive in.
  • Dairy Products - Dairy products cause an irritation to the delicate mucus membrane lining and stimulate the nasal lining to increase their production of mucus. Dairy products are known to thicken mucus making effective mucus drainage difficult which results in post nasal drip.
  • Continuously eating foods that you are allergic too - Eating foods your body does not process well often results in thick mucus again causing poor mucus drainage and congested nasal passages manifesting as post nasal drip.
  • Inhaled Irritants - Post nasal drip can be a result of particles and microbes, such things as dust, pollen and smog, that we breathe irritate the nasal passages causing swelling of the nasal and sinus lining.
  • Smoking- Smoking damages the cilia hindering their ability to transport excess mucus. Smoking irritates and inflames the delicate mucus membrane lining of the nasal passages increasing the amount of mucus the nasal membrane secretes often causing post nasal drip.
  • Caffeine and alcohol - These substances may cause the drying out and thickening of mucus resulting in post nasal drip.
  • Colds and flu - Cold or flu lowers the body's natural defenses. This makes it easier for a person to develop post nasal drip and sinus infection.
  • Throat problems - This disorders may result in an accumulation of fluids, mucus and solid particles in the back of the throat. This accumulation of foods and liquids may cause the glands of the throat to increase their mucus production resulting in post nasal drip. A growth or swelling at the back of the throat makes swallowing  difficult.  The mucus will then stagnate becoming thick  creating another perfect environment for sinusitis creating bacteria.
  • Pregnancy and Birth control pills - These cause fluctuations in bodily hormones. These fluctuations may increase mucus production and consequently result in post nasal drip.
