A Frightening Sinus Infection Story

In October 2006,  Sue Carlisle contracted a sinus infections.  At age 49, she had experienced sinus infection in the past, for which steroids were prescribed. With the October sinus infection, Sue turned to her usual steroids in order to clear up the infection. But after ten days the sinus infection was not getting better.

Sue went to her doctor, who diagnosed her with mucormycosis, a rare and deadly infection that was now in her sinuses. Sue was told that Mucormycosis is cause by common fungi found in soil or moldy vegetables or bread. Most people are exposed to this type of fungi on a daily basis, but those, like Sue, with weakened immune systems often caused by overuse of steroids and antibiotics, are more susceptible to infection.

For Sue, the repeated use of steroids to treat her sinus infections had weakened her immune system so much that she was not resistant to the fungi that caused the mucormycosis. Mucormycosis is deadly. It travels through the blood to the brain in a matter of days, where it is likely to cause death.  In Sue's case the mucormycosis, trapped and/or exacerbated by her sinus infection, stayed in her face causing it to become so infected her cheek burst leaving her with a hole in her face. For the next two months doctors performed nearly 30 surgeries to remove small amounts of infected tissue, (as reported by ABC News). 

Sue faced the possibility of losing her jaw because the infection had destroyed most of her jawbone and palate. She couldn't open her mouth to eat or speak. Sue has never fully recovered from this traumatic experience.  She is not able to chew properly and has a limited sense of taste and no sense of smell.  All because of a sinus infection!

Complications of sinus infection occur mostly in people who have had no previous episodes of sinusitis.
